Jaunpur

Jaunpur
A town on the bank of the Gomti River about 25 kilome-ters northwest of Varanasi (Benaras), it was founded by Firuz Shah Tughlaq (1351-1388) in 1359-1360. He named it after his cousin and predecessor, Muhammad bin Tughlaq (1325-1351), whose original name was Muhammad Jauna. In the wake of Timur's inva-sion (1398), Jaunpur emerged as the capital of the Sharqi dynasty and controlled the vast territory that extended roughly from Kanauj to Bihar. Jaunpur was finally annexed to the Lodi Empire when Sikandar Lodi (1489-1517) expelled the last ruler of the Sharqi dy-nasty from there. The town is famous for the monuments represent-ing the Sharqi style of Indo-Muslim architecture. See also ATALA MASJID; MALIK SARWAR SULTANUS SHARQ.
